According to the policy approved by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the contact info a domain is registered with must be valid and up to date at all times. Plus, this information is publicly available on WHOIS lookup sites and while this may be OK for companies, it may not be very acceptable for individuals, because everyone can see their names and their personal email and postal addresses, all the more so in times when identity theft isn’t that uncommon. That’s the reason why domain name registrars have introduced a service that conceals the details of their customers without altering them. The service is called Whois Privacy Protection. If it is enabled, people will see the details of the domain registrar, not those of the domain owner, if they do a WHOIS lookup. The Whois Privacy Protection service is supported by all generic domain extensions, but it’s still not possible to conceal your private info with some country-code extensions.
